Baitadi, Oct 23: The first-ever commercial paragliding in far-western Nepal is set to be introduced with Baitadi poised to start the adventure sport with an aim to boost tourism.

After an assessment from a team of experts, paragliding is set to kick off at Patan area of Baitadi during the Tihar festival or near the end of October. The adventure sport involving lightweight glider aircraft was set to start two months ago during the far-western region’s prime festival of ‘Gaura Parva’ but was postponed due to technical reasons.

A team led by Dharam Chand from India’s Himachal Pradesh had started to scour Nepal’s far west to locate spots favourable for paragliding since 2011. The team set its eyes on Patan of Baitadi after a thorough perusal of the rugged terrain in Nepal’s far western region.

The team has declared four spots in Patan as favourable for paragliding or paragliders. The four locations include Daha Danda at Patan Municipality – 12, Jaraula Danda at Patan – 2, Annadi Danda at Patan – 13 and Hurhure Danda at ward no 11.

Initially the tests were held at Dadeldhura for paragliding, but it did not seem possible due to monotonous flow of the wind, technical team’s member, Shyam Raj Bhatta told the National News Agency (RSS).

Indian tourists from Delhi, Lucknow and Naini among other places will be drawn to Baitadi in Nepal in coordination between various paragliding entrepreneurs, it is learnt. RSS
