Locals reconstruct quake-damaged Lo Manthang palace

Mustang, Oct 31: With the government support taking forever to come by, the locals in Mustang district have themselves reconstructed the quake-damaged Lo Manthang palace in the district.
The eastern front of the five-storey Palace at the remote Upper Mustang region had sustained damages during the Gorkha Earthquake in 2015.
Enlisting this 15th century palace in the quake-damaged archaeological infrastructures list, the District Administration Office had recommended to the Department of Archaeology for its reconstruction but to no avail.
The budget delay long impeded the reconstruction effort. Hence the locals took matters into their own hand and mobilized voluntary labour and locals resources to expedited monument reconstruction, according to Indradhar Bista, a local.
More than a dozen of local youths toiled for a week to reconstruct the 108-roomed palace. Some Nepal-lover German nationals had also provided financial assistance in personal capacity towards this cause, shared Bista.
The adjacent stupas and houses had also remained under constant risk due to the dilapidated mud-made palace.
Lo Mangthang palace, a historical heritage, is still in the name of its former King Jigme Palbar Bista.
As the palace has been repaired and finds itself in good shape, it is well poised to attract more visitors. RSS
