Dhankuta, Nov 8: The Kirat Aathpahariya community has demanded transforming the Dhankuta Municipality into an autonomous region of the Aathpahariya people.
At a press conference held by Kirat Aathpahariya Society Nepal, Dhankuta on Monday, they demanded sending a recommendation to the restructuring commission for naming the municipality as an autonomous body.
Society’s Chairman, Kamal Charahang, said the community’s sentiment and aspirations were hurt when Dhankuta was not declared Aathpahariya autonomous region. He warned the community people will not back down from meeting any consequences if it is not declared an Aathpahariya autonomous region.
There are around 15,000 Aathpahariya people living in Dhankuta municipality, according to the Society. However, legal provision stipulates that 51 per cent of the total population of any given region must have their backing if the region is to be made autonomous under certain name. RSS
