37 rescued from capsized boat, many more missing

Inaurwa, Sept 17: Thirty-seven passengers were rescued from a boat that capsized in the Saptakoshi river in Rajbas of Prakashpur VDC-5, Sunsari district.

The incident took place on Saturday afternoon when a boat carrying passengers from the Sri Lanka island in the midst of the river to Prakashpur capsized. Some youths travelling in another boat helped rescue 23 passengers. A team of police and army personnel had also reached the site soon after being informed about the mishap.

However, there are conflicting reports about the number of passengers in the boat when it capsized. Hence, the details of those missing are yet to be received as of this evening, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Sunsari Binod Ghimire said.

Though Sunsari administration has suspected eight people missing but the passengers, who were rescued, said at least 15 people are missing from among more than 60 that were travelling in the ill-fated boat. Heavy rainfall in the area since the noon has made rescue work difficult, said Chief District Officer of Sunsari Mohan Chapagain. RSS
