PM leaves for US to attend UNGA tomorrow

PM Dahal will hold a special meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. He will deliver speech regarding climate change at a special ceremony to be organised by the Secretary-General.

PM Dahal is scheduled to attend a welcome programme to be hosted by Secretary-General Ban and US President Barack Obama in honour of the heads of the State and of government of the countries participating in the UNGA.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, is scheduled to participate in a SAARC ministerial meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly. Minister Mahat will hold a meeting with external affairs ministers of the neighbouring countries.

The Nepali delegation will also hold discussions at different-level on the matters relating to development after Sustainable Development Goals and climate change and exchange experiences with least developed countries, developing countries, G77 and other partners during its stay in US.

Nepal has been making preparation to raise issues as climate change, terrorism, least-developed countries and landlocked countries in the General Assembly.

Nepal is expected to present its views in favour of the integrated programmes aimed to mitigating the impact of climate change being faced by many countries including Nepal; climate change impact on the areas ranging from mountain to costal zones and its possible negative consequences, in the General Assembly.

The issues of least developed countries are likely to be the priority agenda of Nepal in the General Assembly. Nepal seems confident to raise such agenda due to its noticeable role in the United Nations peace keeping missions. It has been contributing to the UN peace keeping mission in over 40 countries for the past five decades.

Nepal’s participation in the UNGA this time carries more meaning in the context when it has already witnessed the promulgation of the constitution through the Constituent Assembly and majority works of the peace process had already been accomplished.

The UN role in accelerating Nepal’s peace process is highly evaluated.

The then Deputy Prime Minister Prakashman Singh had presented the country in the 70 the UNGA last year.

Minister Finance Affairs Dr Mahat has already departed for New York straight from New Delhi on Sunday morning to participate in the UNGA. He had been in the PM’s entourage to the State visit to the southern neigbour.

The 71st UNGA that kicked off in New York last Tuesday will run for 10 days. RSS
